STORYTELLING
All the stories I tell as a traditional oral storyteller originate in Africa. All the books I write are set in Africa too. It is there that my roots go deep into the rich soil.
Some of the stories that I tell did not travel far to get to me. A journey as short as from my father’s lips to my ears. Some stories travelled further to reach me... from anonymous African tellers into an Englishman’s published book of African stories... a Jamaican storyteller telling a Ghanaian story on the BBC.
Some of the African stories I am passionate about telling travelled across the Atlantic over a hundred years ago (maybe even four hundred years) in the hearts and minds of those who survived the middle passage. Stories were one of the only things these kidnapped peoples could take with them when forced to leave their homelands empty handed.
Incredibly some of these stories survived. They changed and evolved, but they survived.
Centuries and millennia have honed and polished the stories that I tell; centuries and millennia of tellers, and of listeners too. I am passionate about telling them, and eager to tell them to this new generation.
